When the player dies, they are just sent back to the beginning of the section, reducing stress and encouraging players to try again. Getting rid of “lives” doesn’t mean the game is any easier. The biggest revolution for “Rayman Origins” is that it finally gets rid of “lives.” Lives are an antique aspect of gameplay from the days of the arcade when players were required to feed a game more quarters to gain more lives. This hardly happens in “Rayman Origins” as the players’ characters never collide, and are able to bring the dead players back into the action with a smack of their bubbled selves. Wii” and “Donkey Kong Country Returns,” the co-op felt detrimental to the core gameplay, leading players to unintentionally sabotage one another. Speaking of Nintendo, “Rayman Origins” finally gets something right that Nintendo seems to: the co-op. Nintendo could take a cue from “Rayman Origins” on how to handle its next foray into a 2D Mario game. The game also hides items in such a way that they are instantly recognizable, but hard to reach. Levels have been crafted to slowly raise the difficulty level with new abilities that are tested on a constant basis.

While this version sticks to the tropes of the genre by collecting items during the levels for 100 percent completion, it does so with finesse rarely seen from the genre. This lends to some of the most beautiful visuals produced for this console generation. Michel Ancel’s UbiArt engine allows artists to import their art directly into the game. The biggest selling point for “Rayman Origins” is the visuals. “Rayman Origins” is most like the first Rayman game because it is a 2D platformer instead of the 3D platformers of later Rayman games, and because it is stylistically similar to the with its return to the wild environments.

The game featured crazy worlds full of sentient musical instruments and kooky environments. 15 and is nothing like its elder.įor those unfamiliar, Rayman is UbiSoft’s platformer mascot from the mid-90s, who was unique for his lack of limbs. So, imagine my surprise when I was given the chance to review “Rayman Origins,” which debuted on Nov. The last Rayman game I remember playing was “Rayman 2” (originally released in 1999).
